Kodak Super-XX was a high-speed black-and-white film introduced in the late 1930s, originally as an upgrade to Eastman’s earlier motion-picture stocks. Known for its rich tonality, strong mid-contrast, and deep shadow detail, it became a favorite among both Hollywood cinematographers and large-format still photographers — especially for press and documentary work through the 1940s–1960s. It had a classic cubic-grain structure and a distinctive “thick” tonal look that modern emulsions don’t quite replicate. Discontinued in the early 1990s, it’s still revered for its gritty, dramatic rendering and timeless pre-T-grain character.
