Kodak Plus-X Pan was a medium-speed black-and-white film with an ISO rating of 125, beloved for its fine grain, smooth tonal range, and classic look. Introduced in the 1940s, it became a staple for decades in the toolkits of photojournalists, fine art photographers, and students alike. It was positioned between slower films like Panatomic-X and faster ones like Tri-X, offering a sweet spot of sharpness, detail, and flexibility for a wide range of photographic work.
Plus-X was important because it offered exceptional image quality with low grain and rich midtones, making it ideal for controlled lighting conditions, daylight, and studio use. It was widely used in educational settings, in newspapers, and by serious hobbyists who wanted more subtle contrast than Tri-X without giving up detail. It responded beautifully to precise exposure and careful development, and it was also known for scanning well — even back when that meant making darkroom prints rather than digital files.
Visually, Plus-X had a classic, clean look. It produced luminous highlights, smooth gradients, and just enough contrast to give images depth without harshness. Its aesthetic was more refined and subdued than the gritty, grainy punch of Tri-X — perfect for portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and anything where tonality and detail mattered most. Though discontinued in 2011, Plus-X is remembered as one of the most well-rounded black-and-white films ever made — a quiet legend that rewarded technical precision with timeless beauty.
